Custard powder

Custard has been a part of European cuisine, that since Ancient Rome. Custards was packed in pastry (custard tarts), they were very popular in the middle centuries but in modern times, the name’s custard is sometimes applied to starch-thickened preparations like custard powder.

Custard powder is a fine particulate food product made from corn starch with the addition of salt, flavor and color, and with or without the inclusion of egg solids, vitamins and minerals that turns into a rich, sweet vanilla sauce once heated with milk and sugar.

Based on food law, custard powder should be in the form of a fine powder, free from rancidity, adulterants, insect or fungus infestation and from fermented, musty or other objectionable odor. The material shall also be free from dirt and other suspended and extraneous matter.

As well as a topping on many desserts, it also acts as a tasty base for many savory recipes. Custard powder is a popular dessert item and is served with egg pudding, jelly crystals etc. Commercial custard powder found in grocery stores is made with corn-flour, riboflavin, normal salt, and different flavors.
